There is a woman two streets over who makes the most extraordinary tamales. There is a retired teacher on the corner who could explain your tax forms in plain English. There is a teenager nearby who fixes old bicycles just for the satisfaction of it. None of them are advertising. None of them are charging. And most of us will never know they exist — unless someone builds a bridge between what people have and what people need. That bridge has a name. It is called a time bank.

A time bank is beautifully simple in the way that most good ideas are. One person offers an hour of help — cooking a meal, driving someone to an appointment, fixing a leaky faucet — and earns one time credit. That credit can then be spent receiving an hour of someone else's help in return. A carpenter's hour is worth the same as a piano teacher's hour. A college student's hour is worth the same as a retired nurse's hour. There is something quietly radical about that kind of equality. It says that what you know and what you can do matters, regardless of what the market has decided your profession is worth.

Starting one in your neighborhood does not require a committee, a grant, or a laminated sign-up sheet. It starts with a conversation — maybe at a block party, maybe in a group chat, maybe just between you and three neighbors who already trust each other a little.
