There is something quietly radical about the idea that an hour of your time is worth exactly the same as an hour of anyone else's. Not your resume, not your zip code — just your hour. That's the whole premise behind a neighborhood time bank, and it's the kind of idea that sounds almost too simple until you realize how much we've been overcomplicating things all along. You teach someone's kid to play guitar for an hour. They help you fill out a confusing form for an hour. Nobody owes anybody a dollar. Just an hour for an hour.

What makes a time bank feel different from a favor economy — where you're always half-counting in the back of your head — is that it's actually tracked, gently and without judgment. A shared log or a simple app keeps record of hours given and received. This small act of accounting removes the social awkwardness of "I owe you one" hanging in the air between neighbors at the mailbox. It gives people permission to ask for help without feeling like a burden, which, if you've ever needed help and hesitated to ask, you know is worth more than any currency.

Starting one doesn't require a committee or a grant or a neighborhood full of extroverts. It starts with two people agreeing that their time has equal worth, and a third person noticing and wanting in. Someone in your neighborhood knows how to hem pants. Someone else makes incredible tamales and would love to teach it. Another person has spent thirty years fixing bicycles and has nowhere particular to be on Saturday mornings. A time bank doesn't build community so much as it reveals the community that was already there, waiting for a reason to show up for each other.
