Here is something nobody tells you about starting a neighborhood book club: the book almost doesn't matter. What matters is that someone finally gave people a low-pressure reason to sit in the same room together, hold a warm mug, and say something true. The book is just the door. What's on the other side is the whole point.

There's a particular kind of neighbor — maybe you know one, maybe you are one — who has waved hello for three years and genuinely doesn't know the other person's last name. Not out of coldness, but out of that familiar, comfortable distance we all quietly agree to keep. A book club gently dissolves that agreement. It gives people a shared thing to have noticed, a character to argue about, a passage that surprised them at 11pm on a Tuesday. Suddenly you're not just neighbors. You're people who know what moved each other.

You don't need a formal setup or a curated reading list to begin. A group text, a living room, and five people willing to show up is enough. Let the conversation wander off the page — it will, and it should. The best moments in a neighborhood book club are usually when someone closes the book entirely and says, "that actually reminded me of something that happened to me." That's not getting off topic. That's the whole topic.
