Something To Celebrate: World Whale and Dolphin Day

Every year on July 23rd, the world sets aside a whole day to honour whales and dolphins — creatures who have somehow managed to be magnificent, emotionally intelligent, and completely unbothered by email. World Whale and Dolphin Day was established to raise awareness about protecting these marine mammals and the oceans they call home. It's been swimming along since 1986, which, honestly, is longer than most of us have kept a houseplant alive.
Now, you might be thinking: I live nowhere near an ocean. The most aquatic thing in my life is a leaky kitchen tap. And that's completely fair. But there's something quietly lovely about knowing that right now, while you're going about your Tuesday, a humpback whale somewhere is singing a song so complex it would make a composer weep. The ocean keeps doing its enormous, ancient thing regardless of our to-do lists. That's not a bad reminder to carry around in your pocket.
Here's the thing about celebration — it doesn't need to be grand or directly relevant to your postcode. There's always something worth pausing for, some corner of the world doing something wonderful without asking for your attention. Today it just happens to be the cetaceans. Tomorrow it'll be something else. The calendar is quietly full of reasons to feel a little less gloomy, if you know where to look.
So today, take thirty seconds. Watch a short clip of dolphins playing in a boat's wake, or read one wild fact about blue whales (their hearts are the size of a small car — genuinely). Let it be a tiny, pleasant interruption in your day. You don't have to do anything big. Just notice that the world is still out there, being remarkable, and let that be enough.
