Something To Celebrate: Nelson Mandela International Day

Every year on July 18th — Mandela's birthday — the United Nations asks each of us to give just 67 minutes of service to others. Why 67? Because Mandela spent 67 years of his life dedicated to public service. Which, honestly, makes the rest of us feel a little sheepish about how we spent our last 67 minutes. (No judgment. Scrolling counts as research.)
Here's the quietly beautiful thing about a day like this: it doesn't ask you to be extraordinary. It asks you to be useful — for just over an hour. That could mean helping a neighbor carry groceries, donating to a cause you believe in, or simply being genuinely kind to someone who was rude to you first. That last one, by the way, is practically an Olympic sport. Mandela himself would probably respect the difficulty level.
And look — even if your day has been ordinary, a little chaotic, or somehow both at once — there is always something worth celebrating here. The fact that one human life can inspire a global holiday built entirely around giving rather than receiving? That's rather lovely. That's the kind of story that makes you want to be a slightly better version of yourself, which is really all any of us can manage on a Tuesday.
So today, find your 67 minutes — or start with 6, honestly, no pressure — and put a little good into your corner of the world. Make your tea, take a breath, and then do one small thing that Mandela would nod at approvingly. You've got this. The bar is warmth, not perfection.
