Something To Celebrate: International Tiger Day

Every year on July 29th, the world pauses to celebrate International Tiger Day — a holiday founded in 2010 at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit, where world leaders apparently looked around and thought, "You know what this meeting needs? More tigers." And honestly, they were right.

Now, you might be thinking, "I have never personally met a tiger. What does this have to do with my Tuesday?" Fair point. But here's the thing — tigers are solitary, quietly powerful creatures who prefer dense forests to crowded spaces and operate best on their own schedule. If that doesn't describe at least three people you know (or, let's be honest, yourself on a good day), I'm not sure what to tell you. We contain multitudes. Some of those multitudes have stripes.

There's always something to celebrate, even when it feels a little far removed from your daily life. Not every holiday needs to be personally relevant to be genuinely delightful. Sometimes joy is just about showing up for something bigger than your to-do list — a reminder that the world is wilder and more wonderful than your inbox would have you believe.

So today, let yourself enjoy it a little. Look up a photo of a tiger cub if you need a reason to smile. Donate a few dollars to a conservation fund if you're feeling generous. Or simply carry the quiet knowledge that somewhere out there, a very large cat is absolutely unbothered — and maybe borrow a little of that energy for yourself.
