Daily Prayer: Waking Up to a Soul's Deepest Craving
"My soul yearns for you in the night; in the morning my spirit longs for you. When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness."

There's a particular kind of internal hum that starts even before the alarm clock has the audacity to go off, isn't there? For me, it’s not always the urgent mental list of work deadlines, or remembering to text my adult child back, or even the vague nagging feeling about that pile of clean laundry still waiting. Sometimes, it’s a quieter, deeper pull. A yearning that feels ancient and entirely separate from the demands of my very modern, very busy mid-week, late-spring existence.
The Echo in the Night, The Whisper in the Dawn
Isaiah 26:9 speaks so directly to this. “My soul yearns for you in the night.” The night is when my guard is usually down. The external world finally quiets, and my own internal monologue, while still present, tends to soften. It’s when the deepest longings, the ones I might drown out with podcasts or endless scrolling during the day, have a chance to rise to the surface. It’s a gentle, persistent ache for spiritual connection, a profound sense that I’m made for more than just managing spreadsheets and coordinating dinner.
And then, “in the morning my spirit longs for you.” The transition from night's subconscious yearning to morning's conscious longing is fascinating. It's the moment when the world starts to rush in again, the moment I reach for my first cup of coffee and mentally prepare for the day's sprint. Yet, before the first sip, there's often this almost imperceptible stretching of my spirit towards something beyond the immediate. A longing for guidance, for presence, for a wisdom that goes deeper than my To-Do list.
Learning While Living
The second part of the verse, “When your judgments come upon the earth, the people of the world learn righteousness,” feels a bit heavier, doesn't it? It's not always comfortable to consider. But I've found that in my own life, the times of "judgment" – the unexpected hardships, the moments that rattle my carefully constructed world, the seasons of real challenge – are precisely when I stop relying on my own strength and scramble for a deeper understanding. It’s when my faith becomes less theoretical and far more vital.
It’s easy to cruise along when everything is smooth. But when something shakes me – a parenting hurdle with my grown kid, a sudden workplace stressor, or even just a particularly harsh news cycle – it often forces me to re-evaluate my priorities and seek God’s perspective with an urgency I don't always cultivate in calmer times. It's in these moments that I learn, really learn, what righteousness truly means – not just right behavior, but right relationship, right thinking, right heart.
As a working mom, navigating the daily grind, the yearning for God isn't always a dramatic declaration. Sometimes it's a quiet sigh over the sink, an unspoken prayer while waiting for a meeting to start, or a moment of gratitude before diving into the next task. But it's always there. A steady, underlying current that reminds me where my true home, and my truest purpose, lies.
A Friend-to-Friend Prayer
God, honestly, sometimes my soul yearns and my spirit longs for you, but sometimes they just feel tired. Sometimes the night brings worries more than reflection, and the morning brings a sprint instead of a stretch toward you. Help me to truly feel that deep pull you talk about in Isaiah. And when life gets hard, when the "judgments" make me uncomfortable, don't let me retreat. Instead, help me to lean in, to learn, to grow, and to find the righteousness you desire for me. Be with me today, in all the mundane and magnificent moments. Amen.
