Daily Prayer: Holy Enough for a Tuesday
Daily Prayer: Holy Enough for a Tuesday
"But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: "Be holy, because I am holy.""
— 1 Peter 1:15-16
Here's a thought that stopped me mid-coffee this morning: God looked at everything He is — perfect, set apart, above every mess I've ever made — and then said, yeah, be like that.
No pressure, right?
It's mid-week. Summer is doing its thing — hot, a little sticky, loud with lawn mowers and neighborhood kids. The to-do list from Monday is still sitting there, slightly judging me. And somewhere between answering a work email and texting my adult kid back about something completely unrelated to holiness, this verse landed on me like a gentle but very firm hand on the shoulder.
Be holy in all you do.
All. Of. It.
The Part Nobody Really Talks About
We talk about holiness like it lives in a church building. Like it comes out on Sundays and goes back in the closet with the good dishes on Monday morning.
But Peter doesn't say "be holy in your church attendance" or "be holy when people are watching." He says in all you do. Which, if I'm being honest with myself, includes the way I respond when my husband asks me something right when I'm in the middle of a thought. It includes how I handle a work situation that feels unfair. It includes the tone I use when my grown child and I don't see eye to eye — which, as any mom of an adult kid knows, is a whole different kind of parenting challenge than the toddler years.
Toddlers you can redirect. Adults you just have to love and let be.
Holiness, apparently, is required in both situations.
So What Does Holy Actually Mean Here?
The word in the original Greek is hagios — set apart, different, not common. God isn't calling us to be weird or rigid or the person at the office who makes everything awkward. He's calling us to be distinct. To carry something different into ordinary spaces.
To be the one who chooses patience when impatience is the obvious move. To be the one who doesn't join in when the conversation turns sour. To be the one who shows up with grace when the situation doesn't deserve it.
That's the call. Not perfection. Just direction.
The Part That Actually Helps Me
What I keep coming back to is the beginning of the verse: "just as he who called you is holy."
God doesn't say "be holy because you should be better." He says be holy because of who called you. That's different. That's identity, not obligation.
It's the difference between cleaning the house because you're afraid of judgment versus cleaning it because you love the people who live there.
The One who called me is holy. And somehow, for reasons I will never fully wrap my brain around, He called me anyway — in the middle of my ordinary Tuesday, in this ordinary life of work deadlines and marriage and parenting and trying to keep a few houseplants alive through the summer heat.
He called me. And that changes how I move through the day.
It's Not a One-Time Decision
I think I used to believe holiness was something you arrived at. Like a destination. Like one day you'd just be holy and the work would be done.
But it's more like staying hydrated. You have to keep choosing it. Every conversation. Every reaction. Every moment you could go low and instead choose to go toward something better.
Some days I do that well. Some days I very much do not.
But the invitation is the same either way: be holy, because I am holy. Not "be holy because you've earned the right." Not "be holy once you've got your act together." Just — be holy. Today. In this. Right now.
Even on a Tuesday in the middle of summer when nothing feels particularly sacred.
Maybe That's the Whole Point
Maybe holiness isn't supposed to feel sacred all the time. Maybe it's supposed to feel like choosing kindness when you're tired. Like holding your tongue when you could easily let it go. Like showing up for your people — your spouse, your kid, your coworkers — with something more than what comes naturally.
Not because you're trying to be impressive.
But because you belong to Someone who is.
A Prayer for Today
God, honestly? This feels like a tall order most days. Holy in all I do. You've seen my all. You know it includes the impatient sighs and the half-hearted responses and the moments I choose comfort over kindness.
But I hear what You're saying. You're not asking me to be You. You're asking me to remember who I belong to and let that change how I act.
Help me do that today. In the small stuff — the texts, the emails, the conversations I'm already dreading. In the big stuff too — the relationships that take real work and real grace.
I want to carry something different into my ordinary. Not because I'm trying to look holy, but because You actually are, and somehow You called me anyway.
That still gets me. Thank You for that.
Amen.
