Daily Prayer: When Approval Comes From Above
Daily Prayer: When Approval Comes From Above
"But, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved, but the one whom the Lord commends."
— 2 Corinthians 10:17-18
There's a particular flavor of mild dread I reserve for annual performance reviews, or worse, updating my professional 'highlights' reel. My brain, bless its introverted heart, prefers to simply *do* the work rather than articulate its inherent brilliance. It’s a Tuesday morning, the house is finally quiet after the morning rush, and the autumn light is just starting to filter through the windows. It’s a good moment to sit with a cup of coffee and this verse, which feels like a gentle balm for my soul.
The Pressure to Be Seen
We live in a world that constantly encourages self-promotion, doesn't it? From social media feeds that are essentially curated highlight reels, to networking events where you’re expected to concisely articulate your value, there’s a persistent hum to “make yourself known.” As a working mom, I feel it in my career – the need to speak up, to seek credit, to ensure my contributions aren't overlooked. It’s exhausting, frankly, to always be managing an external perception.
And it's not just work. Even in our personal lives, there can be a subtle pressure to showcase our 'best self' – whether it's the perfectly organized pantry on Instagram or the perfectly behaved child at school pickup. With an adult child, there's a different kind of letting go. Their successes are their own, and the quiet satisfaction of seeing them thrive is far more valuable than any public declaration of "I raised that wonderful human!" Yet, the temptation to seek some sort of credit, even indirectly, can still linger.
Finding True Commendation
This verse from 2 Corinthians cuts through all that noise with such grace. "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord." What a relief! It’s an invitation to shift our gaze from the fickle opinions of others, or even our own often-critical self-assessment, to the steady, unchanging gaze of God.
To boast in the Lord isn't about grandstanding on His behalf, but about acknowledging that anything good, anything effective, anything praiseworthy in our lives ultimately flows from Him. It’s recognizing His strength operating through our weaknesses, His wisdom guiding our decisions, His love enabling us to serve. For a working mom navigating deadlines and dinner plans, it means knowing that the invisible tasks, the quiet persistence, the moments of patience (or lack thereof, quickly repented of!) are all seen by Him. He commends the heart.
Living for an Audience of One
Imagine the freedom that comes with knowing you don't have to constantly prove yourself. You don't have to perform for applause that might or might not come. My husband and I often have these little, unseen moments of support – a quiet encouraging word, a thoughtful gesture that no one else witnesses. The value of those moments isn't in their public recognition, but in the genuine connection and mutual care they represent. In a similar way, God sees those small, faithful acts in our lives, the ones that often go unnoticed by the world.
When our approval comes from the Lord, it grounds us. It allows us to approach our work, our marriage, our parenting – even our quiet hobbies – with a different kind of motivation. Not to earn a pat on the back, but to faithfully carry out what we believe we’re called to do, trusting that His commendation is the only one that truly matters. It’s a quiet confidence, knowing that our worth is already established by an eternal, loving judge who knows us intimately and perfectly.
The autumn leaves are starting to fall outside, a gentle reminder of seasons changing and things letting go. Maybe it’s a good season to let go of the need to commend myself, and instead, rest in the commendation that truly counts.
A Friend-to-Friend Prayer
God, here I am again, wrestling with my own humanness. You know how much I sometimes crave approval, how I can get tangled up in what others think, or even in my own internal measurements of success. It's tiring. Help me, Lord, to truly boast in You. Remind me that You see the unseen, You value the quiet efforts, and Your commendation is the only one I ever truly need. Free me from the endless cycle of trying to prove myself. Let my heart rest in knowing that what matters to You, matters most. Thank you for seeing me, just as I am. Amen.
