Daily Prayer: Standing Firm When the Wait Feels Long
Daily Prayer: Standing Firm When the Wait Feels Long
"You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near."
— James 5:8
You know those midweek evenings, late autumn, when the air has that crisp edge that makes you want to curl up with a good book and a warm drink? It's that time of day when my internal introvert clock is screaming for quiet, but the mental to-do list for the rest of the week is still doing acrobatics in my brain. Between work deadlines, coordinating schedules with my amazing husband, and, lately, navigating the intriguing dance of supporting our adult child without hovering, sometimes it feels like my patience reserves are running on fumes.
My natural inclination, bless its heart, is to wish everything would just pause until I’ve had a solid 48 hours of uninterrupted personal time. Unfortunately, life, with all its beautiful complexities, rarely offers such a neat pause button. And that’s precisely when a verse like James 5:8 lands with a gentle, yet firm, thud in my spirit.
The Art of Active Waiting
“You too, be patient…” Oh, James. If only it were as simple as snapping my fingers. We live in a world that thrives on instant gratification, so cultivating patience feels like a lost art. It’s not just about waiting idly, though. For a working mom, patience looks like calmly re-explaining a project detail for the fifth time, or not sending that frustrated email right away. In family life, it’s giving space to our adult child to figure things out on their own timeline, even when every fiber of my being wants to offer a shortcut (or just do it for them). It's an active patience, a conscious choice to breathe and trust the process, even when it feels painstakingly slow.
It’s about continuing to show up, to do the next right thing, to water the plants even if you can’t see the roots growing. It’s a moment-by-moment commitment to grace, for myself and for others. And sometimes, let’s be honest, it’s just about not sighing audibly.
Standing Firm in the Everyday
“…and stand firm…” This phrase often conjures images of grand spiritual battles or unwavering faith in the face of persecution. But for me, in the everyday, “standing firm” often looks a lot smaller, but no less significant. It’s about holding onto my values when a work situation gets a bit murky. It’s about maintaining boundaries with love and consistency in our family dynamics. It’s about not letting the daily grind chip away at my core belief that God is good, even when I can’t see the bigger picture.
Standing firm isn't about being rigid or unyielding; it's about having a solid foundation. It's knowing who I am in Christ, and letting that truth be the anchor when the waves of daily demands threaten to toss me around. It’s choosing to believe God’s promises when the evidence in front of me seems to suggest otherwise.
The Anchor of "Near"
And then there’s that powerful motivator: “…because the Lord’s coming is near.” This isn't just about a future event; it’s a living truth that gives purpose to our patience and strength to our firm stand. It reminds me that my current circumstances, whatever they are, are not the end of the story. There’s a beautiful culmination, a divine resolution on the horizon.
Knowing that God is coming, that He is active and present, changes everything. It shifts my perspective from merely enduring to purposefully living. It wraps all my attempts at patience and firmness in a blanket of hope. He is near in the grandest sense, but also near in the quiet of this Tuesday evening, near in the small moments of struggle, near when I feel like giving up. He’s the reason for the wait, and the strength during the wait.
So, as the evening settles in, and I reflect on another day of trying to balance all the things, I’m reminded that my efforts to be patient and stand firm aren’t just about me trying harder. They’re an act of trust, grounded in the certainty of a God who is always on His way, and already here.
Prayer
Dear God,
Thanks for this word today. Honestly, patience isn't always my strong suit, especially when the urgent things clamor for attention and the important things feel like they’re taking forever. And standing firm? Sometimes I just want to sit down and be still for a bit. Please help me, Lord, to practice that active patience in my work, with my husband, and as I navigate the parenting of our adult child.
Remind me daily to stand firm in You, to lean on Your truth when my own resolve feels wobbly. And thank You, truly, for the promise that Your coming is near. It gives my waiting a purpose and my efforts a hope that goes beyond what I can see. Keep me steady, keep me kind, keep me looking to You.
Amen.
