Daily Prayer: A Living, Breathing Offering
Daily Prayer: A Living, Breathing Offering
"Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship."
— Romans 12:1
It's Tuesday morning, and the world outside my window is still waking up, a soft, misty grey promising a hint of spring sunshine later. My coffee is brewing, and I'm scrolling through this verse from Romans, trying to mentally digest "offer your bodies as living sacrifices." Honestly, my first, very un-spiritual thought usually leans toward offering my body an extra hour of sleep, or maybe a really good stretch.
The idea of a "sacrifice" can feel a bit weighty, can't it? My introverted brain immediately pictures something dramatic and painful, like a grand, once-in-a-lifetime gesture. But then Paul adds "living." And that's where it gets really interesting, and frankly, a bit more challenging for my everyday life.
What Does a "Living Sacrifice" Look Like?
For me, a working mom married to a wonderful, sometimes exasperating man, and navigating the complexities of parenting an adult child, "living sacrifice" isn't a single dramatic event. It's the daily, often mundane, choices.
It’s choosing patience when my husband leaves his socks next to the hamper (again). It’s showing up to my job with a willing spirit, even when the to-do list feels like a monster that grows two heads for every one I conquer. It’s biting my tongue when my adult child expresses an opinion I don't quite agree with, and instead, offering a listening ear and a steady presence.
It's in the small, quiet moments too. The commitment to a morning routine that nurtures my spirit before the day demands everything from me. The act of cooking a nourishing meal for my family when I'd rather order takeout. Even the focused attention I give to a task at work, aiming for excellence not for applause, but as an offering.
Finding the "Holy and Pleasing" in the Mundane
This is where God's mercy truly shines. My life isn't always neat and tidy. There are days when my temper is short, my energy is low, and my 'offerings' feel more like grudges. Yet, Romans 12:1 reminds me that it's in view of God's mercy that we do this. He knows I'm not perfect. He knows my struggles, my human limitations.
The "holy and pleasing" part isn't about my flawless execution; it's about my heart's direction. It's the intention behind the act, the desire to live for Him even when I stumble. It's about remembering that even the most ordinary parts of my day – the commute, the emails, the laundry – can become sacred when offered to God.
This verse reframes my entire perspective on worship. It's not just the songs we sing on Sunday, or the big service projects we participate in. It's the everyday rhythm of our lives. It's the conscious decision to align my actions, my time, my energy, my very presence, with His will. It's an ongoing, messy, beautiful spiritual act of worship.
And honestly, on a Tuesday morning, with a day full of demands ahead, remembering this gives a quiet strength. It dignifies the small things, reminding me that even in the ordinary, there's an opportunity for something extraordinary – a moment of connection with the Divine.
A Prayer
God, it's me. Again. Sometimes this "living sacrifice" thing feels like a lot, especially when I'm just trying to get through the day without losing my keys or my patience. Help me, Lord. Help me see my life, my actual, imperfect, busy life, as something I can truly offer you.
Give me grace to be present and kind as a wife, thoughtful and firm as a mom, diligent and honest as a colleague. Help me to remember your mercy, which covers all my shortcomings, and helps me want to try again tomorrow. Let my small, daily offerings, even the tired ones, be a sweet aroma to you. Amen.
