Daily Prayer: Leaning on His Fullness

A quiet moment of reflection

"For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority."
— Colossians 2:9-10

The Mid-Week "Fullness" Check

It's Wednesday afternoon, and the air outside is crisp with the promise of autumn, hinting at the shorter, cozier days ahead. Inside, my own "fullness" sometimes feels less like a divine completeness and more like a coffee cup that’s been refilled too many times, now lukewarm and looking a bit sad. By mid-week, the mental tabs I have open for work projects, household logistics, marital connection, and the gentle art of parenting an adult child can start to feel... well, full. But not in the good, satisfying way. More like crammed. Sometimes I wonder how much more "fullness" I can actually take before I just spill over. Or just sit quietly in a corner and refuse all further input. (That last one is usually the introvert in me speaking.)

What Does "Fullness" Even Mean, Anyway?

Then I read this verse from Colossians, and it stops me short. "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness." It’s not talking about my overflowing to-do list or my mental exhaustion. It’s talking about something infinitely bigger, infinitely more reassuring. It’s about Christ containing absolutely *all* of God – not just a part, not just a portion, but the complete, total essence of divine being. And then, the kicker: *we* have been brought to fullness in Him. Not by our own effort, not by checking off all the boxes, but by simply being *in Christ*. It’s a gift, a state of being, not a goal to achieve.

More Than Enough for My Messy Life

This is such a grounding thought, especially on a Wednesday. When I feel inadequate to the tasks at hand, lacking the wisdom for a particular conversation, or just plain weary, I’m reminded that my completeness isn’t drawn from my own dwindling reserves. It’s drawn from His inexhaustible well. He is "head over every power and authority." That’s not just big, cosmic stuff. That means He’s head over the power of my fatigue, the authority of my anxieties, the sway of my imperfections. If all the fullness of God resides in Him, then there's absolutely nothing missing. And if I am brought to fullness in Him, then what I feel I lack, He utterly supplies. It’s a gentle reminder that I don’t need to try harder to *be* complete. I *am* complete, because He is.

Resting in His Completeness

This changes things. It means I can approach the rest of my week, my work, my relationships, not from a place of scarcity or effort, but from a place of quiet confidence. It means I don't have to pretend I've "got it all together." Instead, I can lean back into the truth of His sufficiency. His fullness doesn't just fill my gaps; it defines my identity. It gives me a quiet strength to keep going, to offer kindness, to navigate the complexities, knowing that the ultimate head over all things has me precisely where I need to be.

Prayer:

Oh God, Here I am, mid-week, feeling a bit stretched and a little less "full" than I'd like to be. It's easy to get caught up in the doing, the managing, the trying. Thank you for this verse, this powerful anchor. Thank you that in Christ, all of You exists, perfect and complete. And thank you that You have brought *me* to fullness in Him. Help me to truly settle into that truth today. When worries about work or my family creep in, remind me that Jesus is head over every power and authority, and He’s got this. Help me to rest in His completeness, and simply be. Amen.
