Daily Prayer: Keeping Our Roots Strong in a Busy World

A quiet moment of reflection

"So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness."
— Colossians 2:6-7

It’s Tuesday morning, and the crisp autumn air is already hinting at a busy day ahead. My to-do list, both mental and written, seems to stretch longer than my patience sometimes. From work emails piling up to remembering to check in with my adult kid, plus the never-ending dance with laundry, my brain often feels less like a well-organized filing cabinet and more like a browser with a hundred tabs open. You know the feeling, right? That slight hum of frantic energy, even before the first cup of coffee has done its job.

In moments like these, when my inner world feels a bit scattered, verses like Colossians 2:6-7 are less like a gentle suggestion and more like an essential anchor. It reminds me that amidst the beautiful chaos of life, there’s a deliberate way to "continue to live."

More Than Just a Start, It's a Daily Walk

The verse begins, "just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him." It’s a powerful distinction. Receiving Christ was that initial, life-altering moment, like taking a deep, fresh breath for the very first time. But "continue to live in him"… that’s the daily grind, the ongoing conversation, the conscious choice we make amidst the lunch rushes and the parent-teacher conferences (or these days, the text messages with an adult child who's figuring things out).

For me, that looks like pausing before I jump into my first work task, just to breathe and remember God's presence. It means not just having faith but living it out—even when it's messy. It’s about remembering that my identity isn't tied to the success of my projects or the perfection of my home, but to Christ. And that’s a freeing thought on a Tuesday morning.

Deep Roots in a Hectic World

Then comes the imagery I love: "rooted and built up in him." Oh, to be rooted! Like a sturdy oak tree that stands firm against the blustering winds of life (or, you know, the unexpected client request that throws off your entire schedule). In a world that constantly encourages us to be fluid and flexible, the idea of being rooted is a profound comfort.

What does that look like in practice for a working mom whose mind is often pulled in multiple directions? It means carving out those tiny moments of stillness – not necessarily a silent retreat, but perhaps five minutes with my Bible app before anyone else wakes up. It’s praying while I’m driving to drop off groceries. It’s remembering that the foundation of my life isn't built on my own strength or ingenuity, but on Christ. And when I feel myself wobbling, I know where to reconnect.

And "built up"? That suggests growth, layering, the slow, intentional work of becoming. It's not about being perfect, but about consistently letting His truth shape who I am, making me stronger in my faith, just "as you were taught." I think about all the lessons learned over the years, the wisdom shared by mentors, the quiet conviction of scripture. These aren't just memories; they're the building blocks of resilience for today.

An Overflow of Thankfulness

And finally, the beautiful culmination: "overflowing with thankfulness." This is the part that truly shifts my perspective. When I'm rushing, when I'm tired, when the demands feel heavy, thankfulness can feel like an extra burden rather than a natural outflow.

But the verse suggests it's an overflow. It's not something I have to muster up from an empty well, but something that springs naturally from a heart that is rooted and built up in Christ. It's recognizing the small mercies: the warm coffee, the sound of my husband laughing on a call, the text from my child that says "I miss you, Mom," even the challenging project at work that pushes me to learn something new.

It’s a choice, yes, but it’s also a consequence of living deeply in Him. When our roots are deep, and our faith is strengthened, gratitude isn't just an obligation; it's the natural song of our souls. And frankly, it makes the rest of the day, with all its browser tabs and to-do lists, feel a little lighter, a little brighter.

A Heartfelt Prayer

Dear God,

It's me. Just checking in here in the middle of a busy Tuesday. My mind is already buzzing with all the things, but Your words in Colossians 2:6-7 stop me and give me solid ground. Help me, Lord, to truly live my life in You, not just in theory, but in every single moment today. Help me remember how I first received You, and to cling to that truth as I navigate work, family, and everything in between.

Root me deep in Your love, Father. Build me up with Your wisdom and strength, especially when I feel weak or scattered. And please, let my heart overflow with real, honest thankfulness, even for the small, everyday things. Guide my steps, calm my spirit, and remind me of Your presence. Amen.
