Daily Prayer: Choosing Abundance Over Depletion
Daily Prayer: Choosing Abundance Over Depletion
""The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.""
— John 10:10
It’s late afternoon on a Tuesday, the light outside starting its slow fade from bright autumn gold to something softer, more muted. The dishwasher just finished its cycle, a low, contented hum in the background, and I’m finally sitting down with a cup of tea. It’s one of those moments where the day’s busy current momentarily slows, and you can feel the accumulated drain on your personal battery.
Sometimes, if I’m honest, I feel like tiny bits of my energy, my calm, even my thoughts, get quietly pilfered throughout the day. A snag in a work project, a quick text from our adult kid needing a quick fix to a tech issue, the endless parade of 'what's for dinner?' questions – each one just a little chip away. It's not malicious, but it leaves you feeling a bit… hollowed out.
The Stealthy Robber of Our Peace
This verse from John 10:10 always hits me because it names that feeling so directly. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy." The 'thief' isn't always some grand, evil mastermind. Sometimes it's the subtle everyday pressures, the constant noise, the pressure to 'do more', or even just our own worries that nibble away at our peace. They steal our joy, kill our motivation, and destroy our sense of contentment, leaving us feeling depleted and running on fumes.
As a working mom with a grown child, a wife, and someone who generally prefers a good book over a crowded room, I’m intimately familiar with the feeling of my internal resources being stretched thin. It’s not just about managing schedules or household tasks; it’s about managing the mental load, the emotional give-and-take that makes up a life lived with others. And sometimes, it feels like I’m just trying to keep my head above water, not truly living.
Beyond Mere Survival
But then there’s the second part of the verse, the part that breathes a deep, hopeful sigh into my soul: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." Jesus isn't offering us a life of just getting by. He's not suggesting we simply endure. He’s promising a life that’s abundant, rich, and truly alive. And for an introvert like me, "full" might not mean a calendar packed with social events, but rather a spirit packed with grace, presence, and genuine peace. It means not just existing, but *living* with purpose and connection, even in the everyday.
For me, accessing that "full life" often means intentionally creating pockets of quiet. It means saying no to some things so I can say a more resounding yes to others. It means pausing to truly connect with my husband after a long day, or being fully present when my son calls, rather than letting my mind wander to the next task. It means recognizing the small wonders outside my window as the light changes, or the comfort of a warm cup in my hands.
It’s about recognizing where the 'thief' is trying to operate in my life – whether it’s anxiety about an upcoming deadline, comparison to someone else’s seemingly perfect Instagram feed, or just the relentless tug of an overflowing inbox – and choosing instead to orient myself towards the Life-Giver. It's a daily, sometimes hourly, choice to remember that I don't have to let the little things drain me dry when there's an endless well of life being offered.
A Prayer for Fullness
God, it’s so easy to feel the squeeze of life today. I get tired, I get distracted, and sometimes I feel like parts of me are just… missing. Help me to see where the everyday thieves are trying to snatch my peace and joy. Remind me, in the quiet moments and the busy ones, that you don't just offer survival, but a life that's truly full. Help me lean into that abundance, Lord, and live each moment with more presence and less pressure. Guide me to your life-giving presence, today and always. Amen.
