Daily Prayer: All In
Daily Prayer: All In
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength."
— Mark 12:30
Sometimes, the idea of "loving with all your strength" feels less like profound spiritual devotion and more like trying to open a stubborn jar of pickles after a particularly long day. Especially on a Tuesday afternoon, when the mental to-do list is longer than my patience for small talk, and the autumn light reminds me that the day is winding down, but my energy isn't exactly surging.
This verse, Mark 12:30, isn't just a suggestion for Sunday mornings or those rare, perfectly peaceful moments. It's a call to an all-encompassing kind of love, reaching into every corner of our being. And honestly, as a working, married mom with an adult child who’s navigating her own adventures, I find myself regularly asking: what does "all" truly look like in the messy, beautiful reality of my everyday?
The Everyday Ask
For me, "all your heart" isn't always a gush of joyful emotion. Sometimes, it's the quiet ache of empathy as I read the news, or the deliberate choice to listen deeply to my husband even when my own thoughts are racing about dinner plans and tomorrow's meetings. It's the yearning for connection and compassion in a world that often feels fractured, and the quiet joy when my adult daughter calls just to chat, knowing I nurtured that space for her.
And "all your soul"? That feels like the deepest part of me, the part that knows what's true even when I'm tired or confused. It's the core conviction that guides my decisions, big and small, and the inner peace I find in just sittingstill for a few minutes, amidst the chaos. It’s where my true self resides, yearning for God’s presence.
Then there's "all your mind." On a Tuesday, nearing the end of a workday, this is a daily wrestling match with distraction. It’s about consciously directing my focus, choosing what I dwell on, and bringing my intentions back to a place of faith, especially when faced with work deadlines or the complexities of guiding an adult child through their own decisions. It's the effort to learn, to understand, and to align my thoughts with God's wisdom rather than just reacting to every fleeting thought.
Finally, "all your strength." This isn't just physical prowess; it’s the energy I put into finishing that report, the effort to make a decent meal instead of ordering takeout (again), or the patience to truly hear about my grown kid's latest challenge without immediately jumping to 'fix it' mode. It's the daily doing, the small acts of service, the consistent effort even when I'd rather just curl up with a book. It’s the showing up, day after day, for life, for others, and for God.
This verse isn't asking for perfection. It’s asking for intention. It’s asking that whatever we bring, we bring all of what we have, in whatever season we’re in—whether we feel strong and vibrant, or a little frayed at the edges. It’s about offering our whole, imperfect selves to a perfect God who meets us exactly where we are.
A Prayer for All of Me
God, it's a lot, isn't it? This 'all.' My heart feels tired, my mind wanders, my strength sometimes feels like it's running on fumes. Help me to truly love You in *all* these ways, not just the easy ones. Help me to see You in the mundane, in the mess, and in the moments of peace. Guide my heart, steady my soul, focus my mind, and strengthen my hands for whatever You call me to do, today and every day. Amen.
