My Quiet Stronghold: Finding Peace When Life Gets Loud
My Quiet Stronghold: Finding Peace When Life Gets Loud
"The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble."
— Psalm 9:9
It’s late afternoon on a Tuesday, and the golden autumn light is starting to slant just right through the window. It’s usually my favourite time of day – that quiet liminal space before evening fully sets in. But today? Today, it just highlights the pile of 'to-do' items that didn't get done, the stack of papers I really should sort, and the faint hum of my brain refusing to settle down.
My work day spilled a little long, then there was a quick chat with my adult son about his latest adventures (and challenges, naturally), followed by a quick text exchange with my husband about dinner. All good things, truly. But sometimes, as an introvert, it feels like I spend my whole day collecting tiny little energetic obligations, like burrs on a sweater. By the end of it, all I really want is to find a quiet corner and just… unstick them all.
The Daily Tug-of-War
Life, for many of us, isn't usually about grand, dramatic struggles every single day. More often, it's the quiet, relentless tug-of-war. For me, it's the mental gymnastics of balancing work projects with household tasks, nurturing a long-term marriage, and navigating the ever-evolving landscape of parenting an adult child. None of these are "trouble" in the catastrophic sense, but they are certainly "times of trouble" when my own inner resources feel stretched thin.
Sometimes, I feel truly "oppressed" – not by an external oppressor, but by the sheer volume of expectation, both internal and external. The expectation to keep all the plates spinning, to offer the right advice, to manage the budget, to be a present wife, a supportive mom, a capable colleague. It’s a lot, isn't it? And in those moments, my mind races, looking for an escape hatch, a quiet room, a silent space where I can just breathe.
Where Do We Go When We Need to Breathe?
My first instinct is often to grab a cup of tea, maybe find that perfect reading chair, or even just scroll aimlessly for a few minutes. And those things help, for a little while. They offer a momentary pause. But the feeling of being overwhelmed, of needing a true shelter, often lingers just beneath the surface.
That’s when Psalm 9:9 quietly enters my thoughts. "The LORD is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble." It’s not just a comforting idea; it’s a promise. It reminds me that beyond my favourite chair or a warm drink, there’s a real, unwavering place of safety. It's not a physical hideout, but something deeper, more reliable, and always accessible.
More Than Just Hiding
A "refuge" implies shelter, a place to escape danger or pressure. But a "stronghold"? That word suggests something even more robust. It's a fortified place, a bastion of strength. It implies not just a place to hide from trouble, but a place where I can find strength in trouble. It’s a place where I can regroup, gain perspective, and remember that I’m not navigating everything on my own.
It means that when the day feels like too much, when my brain is buzzing with worry or exhaustion, I don't have to pretend to be strong enough to carry it all. I can simply turn to Him. It's a quiet confession of my limits, and a confident leaning into His boundless capacity.
Finding My Way Back to the Stronghold
It's not always easy to remember this in the thick of things. My default setting is often to try harder, to push through alone. But the beauty of this verse is its gentle invitation. It’s not a stern command; it's a generous offer. So, when I feel that familiar sense of being pulled in too many directions, I try a small thing: a whispered prayer, a moment of intentional silence, or simply acknowledging His presence right there with me, in the messy middle of it all.
It’s about consistently turning, even just for a flicker, towards that stronghold. It’s about remembering that I don’t have to strong-arm my way through every challenge, or find every answer by myself. There's a refuge available, a safe place for my heart and mind, no matter how quiet or loud life gets.
A Prayer:
Dear God,
Sometimes the daily hum of life feels so loud. The lists, the worries, the constant push and pull. I get tired, and I feel stretched thin. Thank you for being my refuge, my solid stronghold when everything else feels a bit wobbly. Forgive me when I try to manage it all on my own. Help me to remember to just turn to you, even for a moment, and find that quiet peace you offer. Give me the strength to navigate today and the wisdom to remember you’re always right here. Amen.
