Daily Prayer: When Being "Not Wise" is the Smartest Move

Daily Prayer: When Being "Not Wise" is the Smartest Move

"Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil. This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones."
— Proverbs 3:7-8

It's a Thursday morning, the kind where the promise of a crisp autumn day is finally here, and I've already mentally scheduled my evening tasks before my first cup of tea is finished. My internal monologue is usually a bustling committee meeting, reviewing everything from budget lines to dinner plans, often offering unsolicited advice to myself. Why is it, though, that the loudest voice in my head often isn't the wisest?

That's the question that nudged me awake this morning after reading Proverbs 3:7-8. "Do not be wise in your own eyes." Ouch. It’s such a simple phrase, yet it cuts right to the core of so many of our everyday struggles.

The Burden of Being "Right"

I don't know about you, but I often catch myself clinging to my own opinions, my own solutions, my own way of seeing things. Whether it's the 'right' way to load the dishwasher (yes, it’s a thing), the best approach to a work problem, or even how my grown child should navigate a life decision, there's a strong current pulling me to believe I have the ultimate answer. It’s exhausting, isn't it? This constant mental gymnastics of needing to be in control, to predict outcomes, to always have the "correct" perspective.

As a working mom with a busy household and an adult kid figuring things out, my brain already works overtime. Adding the pressure of feeling like I must always be "wise in my own eyes" adds an unnecessary layer of stress that wears thin pretty quickly. It leaves me feeling brittle, not nourished.

A Simpler Path to Peace

The verse doesn't stop at telling us what not to do. It offers a beautiful, counter-intuitive solution: "fear the LORD and shun evil." This "fear" isn't about being scared; it's about reverence, respect, and acknowledging that there's a wisdom far greater than my own. It's about trusting that there's a good and loving God who actually does have all the answers, and often, my best course of action is to simply get out of His way.

To "shun evil" feels so straightforward in a complex world, doesn't it? It means choosing kindness, honesty, integrity, even when it's inconvenient. It means stepping back from gossip, from bitterness, from the small, insidious things that erode our spirit.

Nourishment for Body and Bones

And the promise? "This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones." Suddenly, it clicked. All that internal striving, the need to be "wise" on my own terms, it's draining. It's the opposite of healthy. But when I choose to bow out of that internal debate, to humbly accept that I don't have all the answers, and to simply seek God and what is good – a profound sense of peace washes over me.

It’s a different kind of strength, not born of my own cleverness, but of quiet trust. It’s the kind of nourishment that seeps deeper than just a good meal or enough sleep. It’s a soul-deep calm that truly feels like it’s strengthening the very core of who I am. It's letting go of the burden of being my own guru, and instead, resting in the wisdom of the One who actually holds everything together.

A Sincere Prayer

Dear God,

Honestly? Sometimes I really do think I know best. I clutch onto my plans, my ideas, my perfect solutions, and then I wonder why I feel so tired and stretched thin. Forgive me for being so wise in my own eyes. Help me to truly fear You, to remember Who is actually in charge, and to simply choose what is good. Take this weight of needing to control everything off my shoulders. Please bring that health and nourishment to my body and bones, the kind that only comes from You. Amen.
