A quiet moment of reflection

The Fleeting Nature of Things

It's a crisp Wednesday morning, the kind where the autumn air makes you pull your sweater a little tighter. The email inbox is already a battlefield, and the calendar looks like a game of Tetris with no clear winning strategy. My mind, ever the squirrel collecting nuts, is already plotting out the next three urgent things I 'must' get done before lunch. There's a subtle, almost humorous absurdity to it all, isn't there? The way we pour ourselves into tasks that will be forgotten by Friday, or chase after aspirations that, in the grand scheme, carry the shelf-life of a carton of milk. As a working mom, I feel this keenly. There's always another project, another metric to hit, another professional goal that feels so vital in the moment. At home, it's about navigating the currents of partnership with my husband, keeping the household afloat, and finding moments of genuine connection amidst the chaos. And then there's the unique phase of parenting an adult child – watching them navigate their own ambitions, their own list of "must-haves" and "should-dos." I see echoes of my younger self, chasing what felt so important, only to realize years later how quickly those things faded into the background.

What Do We Cling To?

This verse, 1 John 2:17, cuts through the noise like a quiet, insistent chime. "The world and its desires pass away." It's not a judgment, but more like a gentle, knowing sigh. A reminder that the thrill of a new gadget, the satisfaction of a perfectly organized event, the temporary status symbols – they're lovely, perhaps, but they're fleeting. We invest so much energy into things that will be obsolete next year, next month, even next week. It prompts a question in my quiet moments: What am I clinging to? What am I letting define my worth or dictate my peace? Is it the approval of others, the number in my bank account, or the perfectly curated image of a "successful" life? Because if it is, this verse assures me, those are all destined to dissipate.

The Forever Perspective

But then, the second half of the verse offers such profound relief: "but the man who does the will of God lives forever." This isn't about grand, sweeping gestures (though sometimes it is). More often, for me, it's about the small, consistent choices in the everyday. It's the patience I offer when I'd rather snap. It's the integrity I choose when expediency seems easier. It's the quiet act of listening, of serving, of simply being present and kind. It's finding peace in giving rather than getting. Doing the will of God often feels less shiny, less urgent than the world's demands. It’s not always about making a splash; sometimes it’s just about being still and letting love guide my actions. It's about building a foundation not on shifting sand, but on something truly solid, something that lasts beyond the last email, the next trend, or even this very season of life. It's a call to re-calibrate, to remember where true life is found. Not in what I acquire, but in how I connect to the Unchanging.

A Prayer

God, sometimes it feels like I'm clinging to sand, trying with all my might to build something lasting with temporary things. My desires are so loud, so demanding, and the world's parade of "must-haves" is so compelling. Help me to hear Your will above all the noise. Help me to loosen my grip on what fades and hold tighter to what truly matters – You, and the things that reflect Your heart and Your kingdom. Give me wisdom today to choose what lasts, even when it feels less shiny or less urgent to the world around me. Remind me of Your eternal perspective when I get caught up in the temporary. Amen.
