Daily Prayer: Shining, Even When You'd Rather Just Be Cozy

A quiet moment of reflection

""You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.""
— Matthew 5:14

It’s Tuesday morning, and the spring sunshine is already doing its best to pry open my eyelids, even through the blinds. I’m on my second cup of coffee, trying to mentally checklist the day ahead before the real demands begin. This time of day, especially before the emails start flooding in, I often find myself craving just a few more moments of quiet, of being… well, a little unobserved.

Then Matthew 5:14 gently nudges its way into my thoughts: "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden." And my immediate, very honest, introvert-brain response is often: *Oh, goodness. Really? Can't I just be a warm glow in a cozy corner?*

The Unseen Influence

As a working mom with an adult child, life is a constant balancing act. Some days I feel like I'm juggling flaming torches and smiling, and other days I'm just trying to remember what I came into the kitchen for. The idea of being "the light of the world" can feel like yet another plate to spin, another expectation.

But then I remember the second part: "A town built on a hill cannot be hidden." It's not about me *trying* to be a spotlight. It's about the very nature of what we are called to be. Our lives, our choices, our faith—they are inherently visible, whether we intend them to be or not. Like a city lights up the night sky, our actions and attitudes reflect something to the world around us.

This isn't about grand, performative gestures. Most days, being "the light" manifests in the small, often unseen, ways:

  • Being patient with my husband when we’re both exhausted after a long day.
  • Offering a genuine word of encouragement to a coworker who's struggling.
  • Listening—really *listening*—to my adult child when they call, even if I'm in the middle of a deadline.
  • It’s in the integrity of how I work, the kindness I extend when I want to snap, and the presence I offer when I'd rather just recharge in silence.

Letting the Light Shine

The beauty of this verse, for me, lies in its gentle insistence. We don't *create* the light; we *reflect* it. The source is divine. This means I don't have to constantly manufacture extra energy to *be* bright. I just need to let the light that's already within me—the light of Christ—shine through.

It’s about living authentically, letting my faith inform my responses, my kindness, and my integrity, even when it feels vulnerable or when my natural inclination is to blend into the background. My quirks, my natural introversion, my daily challenges—they are all part of the unique "town" God built. And even those parts, when submitted to Him, can reflect His grace in a wonderfully relatable way.

This verse is a constant, quiet reminder not to dim the light I’ve been given, not out of fear, not out of comfort, but simply to let it reside and radiate, just as a town on a hill naturally does.

A Sincere Prayer

God, you know I love my quiet corners. You know there are days I’d rather just be a whisper than a shout. But you’ve called me to be light, to be a town on a hill. Help me today to simply reflect your goodness, not to try and be the spotlight myself. Help me to be patient, kind, and present in the small, everyday moments—at work, with my husband, when my kid needs me. Let my life be a gentle beacon, not because I'm so great, but because You are. Amen.
