Daily Prayer: Is That Really You?

Daily Prayer: Is That Really You?

A quiet moment of reflection

"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."
— 1 John 4:1

It's Tuesday morning. The coffee's brewing slowly, and the sun is just starting to peek through the kitchen window, casting long, peaceful shadows. Normally, this is my sweet spot, a few precious minutes before the workday notifications start pinging and the house fully wakes up. But even in this quiet reprieve, my mind is already processing the constant hum of opinions, advice, and news that the world throws at us. It makes me clutch my coffee mug a little tighter and think of today's verse.

“Test the spirits.” It sounds so... spiritual, doesn't it? Like something reserved for grand theological debates or deep, monastic quietude. But honestly, as a working, married mom navigating everything from project deadlines to dinner plans, and yes, even the occasional “helpful” unsolicited advice about parenting our almost-adult child, this verse hits surprisingly close to home. It’s not just about angels and demons; it's about the relentless stream of information we're constantly sifting through.

Filtering the Noise

I sometimes feel like a human spam filter, except instead of emails, it's ideas. Every day, we're bombarded with different narratives about what's good, what's right, what's true, what's urgent. On social media, in the news, from colleagues, even from well-meaning friends – everyone has an opinion, a philosophy, a "spirit" they're operating from. And many of them sound pretty convincing on the surface.

My introverted brain, which already spends half its energy processing stimuli, often wants to just shut down. It's exhausting trying to discern. Is this advice genuinely helpful, or just someone projecting their own anxieties? Is this news headline fear-mongering, or a legitimate warning? Is this cultural trend aligning with God’s heart, or just pulling us further away?

What Does "Testing" Look Like?

For me, testing the spirits isn't about being cynical or suspicious of everyone. It's about a gentle, deliberate pause. It's asking a few simple questions:

  • Does this align with what I know of God's character? Is it loving, truthful, just, full of grace?
  • Does it resonate with the peace of Christ in my spirit, or does it stir up fear and anxiety?
  • Does it encourage me towards God, or away from Him?
  • And, perhaps most practically, does it line up with the unchanging truth I find in Scripture?

There are so many voices out there, some loudly proclaiming their own version of truth, others whispering doubts that chip away at our foundations. It’s hard enough when you're just trying to figure out which brand of yogurt to buy, let alone what spiritual or ethical path to take.

The beauty of this verse is that it doesn't leave us to fend for ourselves. It calls us to discernment, yes, but it also reminds us that there *is* a source of truth against which we can measure everything else. God's Word, His unwavering love, His gentle guidance through the Holy Spirit – these are our anchor points when the currents of the world feel strong and confusing.

It's a continuous practice, this testing. A daily, sometimes hourly, exercise in tuning into God's frequency amidst the static. Especially when I'm tired, or overwhelmed, or feeling pressured to just go with the flow, I need to consciously choose to lean into Him and ask for clarity. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.

Prayer

Oh God, it often feels like the world is shouting a million different things at once, all claiming to be important, all trying to grab our attention. It’s tough to know what to believe, what to listen to, who to trust. My brain gets tired trying to sort through it all. Please help me today. Give me the wisdom to discern the true from the false, the peace-bringing from the fear-mongering. Anchor my heart in your truth, so I can recognize your voice above all the noise. Keep me gentle in spirit, but firm in conviction. Thank you for being my constant, unchanging source of truth. Amen.
