Daily Prayer: Finding My Quiet Corner
Daily Prayer: Finding My Quiet Corner
"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.""
— Psalm 91:1-2
It’s a Tuesday afternoon, the kind where the promise of a quiet evening feels like a distant shore. The sun, finally breaking through a week of early spring grey, is teasing me with the thought of sitting on the porch, but my to-do list just laughs loudly. My adult child is off chasing their own dreams, which is wonderful, but the house still hums with the echoes of responsibilities. If you’re anything like me – a creature who thrives on pockets of quiet amidst the beautiful chaos – then the idea of a 'shelter' sounds like the most luxurious thing imaginable.
Most days, my shelter looks less like a serene cabin and more like the five minutes I steal in the pantry with a cup of lukewarm coffee, or the silence between conference calls. Life, with its steady hum of work emails, dinner plans, and the ongoing dance of a long marriage, doesn’t often pause for extended spiritual retreats. Yet, my soul consistently whispers for that deep breath, that place where the noise can’t reach.
The Shelter I Actually Need
That’s why Psalm 91:1-2 hits differently. "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty." It doesn't say, "He who escapes to a remote island," or "He who finishes all his tasks." It says, "He who dwells." This isn’t about a physical location or a perfected schedule; it’s about a posture of the heart, an ongoing connection.
To "rest in the shadow of the Almighty" – what a beautiful, strong image. It suggests being so close to God that His presence literally provides shade, a sanctuary from the scorching sun of worry, exhaustion, and the relentless demands that our days often bring. It's not about being idle, but about finding an internal quiet, a groundedness that allows me to move through my day rather than be swept away by it.
My Refuge, My Fortress
Then comes the personal declaration: "I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."" This isn't just a general statement about God; it's my statement. In a world that often feels like it's perpetually shaking, the idea of a refuge and a fortress feels incredibly anchoring. Not just a temporary hiding spot, but a strong, unyielding structure that keeps me safe from the things that threaten to overwhelm my spirit.
For me, this looks like trusting Him when a work project feels too big, when I'm worried about someone I love, or even when I just feel utterly drained by the sheer volume of everyday life. It’s the quiet assurance that I’m not navigating any of it alone, that there's a strength backing me up that is far greater than my own.
A Daily Choice
Dedicating myself to 'dwelling' in this shelter, to intentionally declaring Him my refuge, isn't a one-time thing. It's the daily, sometimes hourly, choice to remember where my true rest comes from. It’s choosing to breathe in His presence when the world demands an exhale of effort. It’s the quiet, knowing nod to the truth that even in the busiest moments, I am deeply, securely held.
***
Okay, God. This Tuesday, as I juggle all the hats and try to keep all the plates spinning, thank You for being the quiet corner I crave. For being the strong wall around my heart when it feels vulnerable and the gentle shade when I'm burning out. Help me to truly dwell with You, not just visit. Help me to trust You with the big things and the small, annoying things. Be my refuge, my fortress, my God. Amen.
