Daily Prayer: The Beautifully Unfinished Story
Daily Prayer: The Beautifully Unfinished Story
"God who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus."
— Philippians 1:6
It's a crisp Wednesday morning, the kind where the promise of lingering autumn feels more like a whisper than a shout. The coffee is brewing, the dog is fed, and I've already tried to mentally map out the next eight hours of deadlines, dinner plans, and maybe—just maybe—a moment to myself. I often joke that my spirit animal is a 'to-be-continued' sticker. Because honestly, when does anything in my world truly feel *finished*?
My work inbox seems to replicate itself overnight. The laundry basket, no matter how often emptied, always seems to sprout a new load. And then there's the ever-present, beautiful complexity of family life—a marriage to nurture, an adult child to support as they navigate their own evolving path. It's a constant ebb and flow, a collection of stories always in progress, rarely reaching a definitive "The End."
Not About My To-Do List
This morning, as I sat with my mug, that Philippians 1:6 verse drifted into my thoughts. "God who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." And suddenly, the weight of all my *unfinished* tasks felt a little lighter. Because this verse isn't talking about my to-do list. It's talking about *me*.
It's so easy for me (and I suspect for many of us) to measure worth and progress by visible accomplishments. Did I get everything done today? Am I 'good enough' yet? Am I the mom, wife, employee, friend I *should* be? This verse gently reminds me that my spiritual growth, my character, the very essence of who I'm becoming, isn't left to my own often-frazzled efforts.
A Divine Promise
God isn't just a starter; He's a finisher. He began this 'good work' in me the moment I said yes to Him, and He's committed to seeing it through. It's not a temporary project He'll abandon when things get messy or I stumble (which, let's be honest, happens quite a bit). He's in it for the long haul, right up "until the day of Christ Jesus."
This isn't a call to complacency, mind you. I still have bills to pay and conversations to have. But it's a profound relief. It means that even when I feel inadequate, when my patience wears thin, or when I question if I'm making any real progress at all, there's a divine hand at work. He's chipping away, refining, shaping, and growing me, even in the quiet moments when I'm just trying to remember where I put my car keys.
It's a comforting thought, especially after a long day when I feel more like a collection of frayed ends than a completed tapestry. My journey with God isn't about my perfect performance; it's about His perfect faithfulness. He sees the whole picture, the masterpiece in the making, and He's the one holding the brush.
Prayer
Oh God, thank you for being the ultimate finisher. Thank you that my spiritual growth isn't another item on my never-ending to-do list, dependent on my fluctuating energy or focus. Thank you for beginning a good work in me and for faithfully carrying it on, even when I feel like a chaotic mess. Help me to rest in Your promise today, to trust Your process, and to remember that You're always at work, even when I can't see the progress. Give me peace in the beautifully unfinished parts of my life, knowing You hold the whole story. Amen.
