Why We Still Cheer for Each Other Like It’s Game Day — Even at Work
Why We Still Cheer for Each Other Like It’s Game Day — Even at Work
The coffee's barely done its magic, and already the inbox is humming, the to-do list stretches like a winter evening, and you're thinking about dinner plans while mentally prepping for that afternoon meeting. Sound familiar?
As the air gets that distinct crisp November bite, and the leaves outside my window slowly turn from fiery gold to rich, earthy browns, I find myself thinking about warmth. Not just the cozy sweater kind, but the human kind. Especially at work. You know, that place where we spend so much of our waking hours, often navigating a complex dance of deadlines, personalities, and our own inner dialogues.
I’ve always been one for a quiet celebration, a genuine nod acknowledging someone else’s win. I’m not usually the one leading the cheer squad with pom-poms (my introverted heart much prefers a thoughtful Slack message or a sincere, low-key "great job"), but that doesn’t mean the spirit isn't there. For us working moms, who are often juggling so many roles, those moments of being truly seen and supported by colleagues? They’re gold.
I remember just last week, a colleague, Sarah, finally closed a tough project she’d been wrestling with for months. It wasn't a huge, public win, but I knew the personal effort it had taken. So, I walked over to her desk, not to interrupt her next task, but just to make eye contact. "Hey," I said quietly, "I saw that email. Seriously impressive work on that project. You really stuck with it." Her smile lit up her whole face. It was a shared moment of acknowledging the grind, the perseverance, and the quiet satisfaction of a job well done. No fanfare, just genuine appreciation.
It made me think about how much we need each other, even in the professional space. It's not about being fake or overly performative. It’s about a deeper recognition, a kind of grace we extend to fellow travelers on this journey. It’s seeing someone step up, give their all, and offering that quiet "good job" or "I'm proud of you" that feels like a shared victory. A true game-day cheer, but for the everyday battles nobody else sees.
Maybe it’s because our own daughters are navigating their first big career steps, and we’re subtly reminding ourselves of the kind of support we hope they find in their own workplaces. Or perhaps it’s simply realizing, as we age, that genuine connection is what truly sustains us through the long weeks and busy seasons.
It’s that gentle encouragement that reminds us we’re not alone, that our efforts are noticed, and that we’re all, in our own way, striving for something meaningful. It doesn’t take much – a kind word, a listening ear, a simple acknowledgment – to create a ripple effect of warmth.
What about you? Have you had a moment recently where a colleague truly cheered you on (or you cheered them on) in a way that resonated deeply, even if it wasn't a loud "game day" moment?
