Something To Celebrate: International Customs Day

Happy Friday! And did you know that today, January 26th, marks International Customs Day? Yes, it’s a real thing, dedicated to the folks who keep our international borders ticking. From ensuring exotic plant seeds don't accidentally become invasive species to making sure your online order of a very specific, imported tea arrives without a hitch. It’s a lot more behind-the-scenes magic than most of us realize.
Now, I know what you might be thinking: "Customs? Like at the airport?" And yes, that's part of it. But it also got me thinking about the "customs" in our own daily lives. The specific way you arrange your books on the shelf, the precise timing of your afternoon coffee, or the silent agreement with your pet about whose turn it is to hog the sofa. These are our personal, tiny, often unwritten customs that bring a certain… order to our microcosms.
And that's why, even for a day that might seem a little niche, I firmly believe: there's always something to celebrate. Whether it’s the global systems that allow us to enjoy goods from far-flung places, or the quiet, comforting customs we've lovingly cultivated in our own homes. There's a beauty in the subtle structures that make life flow a little more smoothly.
So, today, perhaps take a moment to appreciate the quiet efficiency of it all. Maybe it’s the customs officials doing their diligent work, or maybe it’s just the comforting custom of your favorite mug and a good book. Whatever your personal customs dictate, I hope you have a wonderfully orderly and enjoyable day!
